Tin Can Mail to Short Hills

January 27, 2019
By Lynne

The latest accession to the historical society collection is this envelope, with no contents, (click on the photo to enlarge it) marked Tin-Can Mail from Tin-Can Island in Tonga. It was sent in 1939 to Miss Jane Villet of “Whitney Place” in Short Hills. The fascinating and fun story of Tin Can Mail can be found in the online story of Tin Can Mail and some quick online research revealed that Miss Jane Vilett was about 14 years old and living at 91 Whitney Road in 1939, when the Tin Can mail was sent to her. Her parents were Janice and Everett Vilett and her father was a graduate of MIT and an executive with Public Service.
